The French troops’ frequent incursions during the late 17th century and the early 18th century revealed the need of having, in this border territory, a military facility devoted to avoid the continuous invasions from the neighboring country.
In 1751, during the reign of Ferdinand VI of Spain, it was decided to build up the Sant Ferran “Real Plaza de Guerra" in the Figueres surroundings.
The building of the Plaza was started in 1753 and the construction works continued until the first years of the 19th century. At the time it was considered as a model of its kind, since it stood out due to the great layout and the magnificence of the completion.
Some of the facts that, currently, make it be considered one of the biggest fortifications of the world and the most important architectural monument of Ampurdán are the 5 Km with moats, the 3.2 Km of perimeter, the 32.5 hectares occupied by the building or its cisterns with capacity for 9 million liters of water.
You can get there by road through AP-7 highway (exit number 4, South Figueres, from Barcelona, or exit number 3 Figueres from France), National Road II and the N-260, or by train.
The station is located in the center of the town and all the trains from the Barcelona-Portbou international line, the regional trains to Barcelona and the trains with destination to Madrid and other points of the State stop there.
