Sant Ferran castle in Figueres was built on the 18th century, during Ferdinand VI reign in Spain. The French troops’ frequent incursions during the late 17th century and the early 18th century revealed the need of having, in this border territory, a military facility assigned to avoid the continuous invasions from the neighboring country.

Today Sant Ferran castle has recovered its splendor and international importance as a historical monument thanks to the Consortium, integrated by the Ministry of Defense, the Autonomous Government of Catalonia and Figueres City Hall.

Fortress of Spain

Sant Ferran castle is one of the Spanish fortresses built on the 18th century and currently preserved as a historical value and cultural heritage from the past. Some of the facts that, currently, make it be considered one of the biggest fortresses of the world are the 5 Km with moats, the 3.2 Km of perimeter, the 32.5 hectares occupied by the building or its cisterns with capacity for 9 million liters of water. Tourist castle

The Sant Ferran castle Consortium was born as a result of the Governing Partnership Agreement, signed on November 6th, 2003 between the Ministry of Defense, the Autonomous Government of Catalonia and Figueres City Hall to put cultural value to Saint Ferdinand castle in Figueres; to do so, the Ministry of Defense yields to the Consortium the use of the lands and facilities of the Castle during a term of fifty years.
