Defense fortifications

The French troops’ frequent incursions during the late 17th century and the early 18th century revealed the need of having, in the this border territory, defense fortifications devoted to avoid the continuous invasions from the neighboring country. 

In 1751, during Ferdinand VI reign in Spain, it was decided to build up Sant Ferdinand “Real Plaza de Guerra” in the Figueres surroundings. The building of the fortress was started in 1753 and the construction works continued until the first years of 19th century. Sant Ferran castle, built on 18th century stands out among the castles of Figueres due to its structure, its history and its state of preservation. Some of the facts that, currently, make it be considered one of the biggest fortresses of the world and the most important architectural monument of Ampurdán are the 5 Km with moats, the 3.2 Km of perimeter, the 32.5 hectares occupied by the building or its cisterns with capacity for 9 million liters of water.

Sant Ferran castle is one of the most nationally and internationally famous monuments of Figueres because of its greatness and the set of activities and services that currently offers.
