The French troops’ frequent incursions during the late 17th century and the early 18th century revealed the need of having, in the this border territory,
defense fortifications devoted to avoid the continuous invasions from the neighboring country.
In 1751, during Ferdinand VI reign in Spain, it was decided to build up Sant Ferdinand “Real Plaza de Guerra” in the Figueres surroundings. The building of the fortress was started in 1753 and the construction works continued until the first years of 19th century.
